Description

Deuterium is a colorless , flammable , and odorless gas .Deuterium is poorly soluble in water, similar to hydrogen, but the solubility is slightly less due to the increased molecular weight. As a gas, deuterium has a lower thermal conductivity than hydrogen, reflecting the greater mass of deuterium molecules. The viscosity of deuterium gas is slightly higher than that of hydrogen gas, again due to the increased molecular weight.Deuterium is chemically similar to hydrogen and can undergo many of the same reactions, although the reaction rates may differ slightly due to the higher mass of deuterium.
Deuterium is used in nuclear fusion research as a fuel source due to its ability to undergo fusion at relatively low temperatures compared to other isotopes. It is also used in scientific research for studying the effects of isotopic substitution on chemical reactions and biological processes.Deuterium oxide (D2O, also known as heavy water) is used as a solvent in various chemical and biological experiments.Deuterium gas itself is not toxic, but it can displace oxygen in the air and lead to asphyxiation if not properly ventilated.Deuterium compounds, such as heavy water, can have different biological effects compared to their hydrogen counterparts and should be handled with care.

Applications

·Deuterium is used to prepare deuterated compounds in chemistry and biochemistry. These tracer molecules    allow to study reaction rates and mechanisms of the reaction.
·Deuterium is used in electronics as a replacement for hydrogen in the annealing or sintering of silicon based semiconductors, flat panel displays, and solar panels.
·Deuterium is used in nuclear fusion reactions.
