Description

Sulfur Dioxide is a colorless , nonflammable, irritating gas with a suffocating odor . It is readily liquefied and is shipped as a liquefied gas in steel cylinder under its own vapor pressure .Sulfur dioxide is highly soluble in water, with about 40 volumes of SO2 gas dissolving in one volume of water at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. It forms sulfurous acid (H2SO3) when dissolved in water.

SO2 has a relatively low thermal conductivity, which is typical for gases, especially those with polar molecules. As a gas, the viscosity of sulfur dioxide is low and behaves similarly to other gases in this regard.Sulfur dioxide is a relatively reactive gas. It can react with water to form sulfurous acid, which can further oxidize to sulfuric acid (H2SO4). It can also react with various organic and inorganic compounds.

Sulfur dioxide is used in the production of sulfuric acid, which is one of the most widely used chemicals in the world. It is also used as a preservative and antioxidant in the food and wine industry. In the paper industry, sulfur dioxide is used in the bleaching process.Sulfur dioxide can cause respiratory problems and is a recognized irritant to the eyes, nose, and throat. It is important to handle sulfur dioxide with appropriate safety measures, including proper ventilation and personal protective equipment (PPE).Exposure to high concentrations of sulfur dioxide can be dangerous and is a hazard in confined spaces or areas with poor ventilation.

Applications

· As a component in calibration gas mixtures for environmental monitoring systems .
· In various chemical reactions.
