Description

Sulfur hexafluoride or sulphur hexafluoride (British spelling) is an inorganic compound with the formula SF6. It is a colorless, odorless, non-flammable, and non-toxic gas. SF6 has an octahedral geometry, consisting of six fluorine atoms attached to a central sulfur atom. It is a hypervalent molecule.Sulfur hexafluoride is poorly soluble in water but can dissolve in non-polar organic solvents.SF6 has a relatively low thermal conductivity, which is typical for gases. As a gas, the viscosity of sulfur hexafluoride is low and behaves similarly to other gases in this regard.Sulfur hexafluoride is relatively unreactive under normal conditions and does not react with most substances. However, it can react with certain materials at high temperatures or under specific conditions.
SF6 is used as an insulating medium in high-voltage electrical equipment due to its high dielectric strength. It is also used in the magnesium and aluminum smelting processes to prevent oxidation of the metal.Sulfur hexafluoride is used in gas chromatography as a carrier fluid.Although sulfur hexafluoride is non-toxic, it can displace oxygen in the air and lead to asphyxiation if not properly ventilated. It is important to handle and use sulfur hexafluoride with appropriate safety measures, especially in confined spaces.

Applications

· As a dielectric in transformers
· As a blanketing agent in metal fabrication
· In semiconductor fabrication: fluorine source for high density plasma etching - offers high selectivity without generating carbon by-products.
