Enriched Oxygen-18 water is used as a target which is bom-barded with the help of cyclotron or linear accelerator in order to produce Flourine-18. Flourine-18 is synthesized into  2-deoxy-2- 18 F-β-D-glucopyranose( 18 F-FDG) which is a radiolabelled sugar molecule used in PET (Positron emission tomography) for determining sites of abnormal glucose metabolism and for local-ization of many types of tumors. Today 18 F-FDG is the most widespread and successful PET radiopharmaceutical.  18 F-FDG is an analogue of glucose, it is injected in vivo and then  18 F-FDG is transported from blood to tissues in a way similar to glucose. Cells absorb FDG like glucose but it cannot be metabolized. A very important advantage of FDG-PET is that it helps accurately define stage and sites of recurrent disease in many cancer types.
